The COVID-19 pandemic has not contributed to further strengthening the confidence of French men and women in the use of their biometric data.

On the other hand, the French population seems, for a majority at least, aware of the issues surrounding the sharing and security of their personal data.

The fingerprint still popular in France

This has been a constant for several years, confirmed by the survey of 716 French men and women over the age of 18 who have conducted an online activity over the past 12 months. The fingerprint remains the biometric data most easily used by respondents, for 47% of them, followed by the scan of the face for 29%, then the scan of the voice and the hand (10% each ).

The main cause comes from our smartphones and their propensity to offer unlocking through the use of our biometric data. Thus, 74% of respondents say they use at least one of their biometric data to access the content of their phone, far ahead of the validation of a banking transaction for 33% and identity checks (28%). .

A certain segment of respondents (38%) believe that they never use their biometric data (fingerprint, voice, iris, etc.) on a daily basis. But on the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic has not pushed French people too much towards this use. For example, only 13% of respondents say they started using their fingerprint after the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to 62% before it.

More quick to share data with the public than the private

While 58% of respondents say they are at least somewhat concerned about the security of their personal data, they remain slightly more likely to share their biometric data with the public sector (32%) than the private sector (25%).

What remains rather worrying is that 58% of respondents believe that they do not know that their personal data can be shared with third parties when using their biometric data, a figure that has been constant since a survey conducted by GetApp in April. 2021. Even more, 92% of them did not take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to change the method of protection on their electronic devices and applications. The three main sources of concern with regard to biometric data concern the potential breach of this data following its theft or loss (45% of respondents), misuse of their biometric data for nearly 44% and a possible identity theft for about 43%.

Finally, a majority of French men and women (55%) are rather quick to share their biometric data under certain conditions, when 37% say they refuse to do so. Although only 9% of them say they agree to share them unconditionally, this should in no way obscure the need to remain vigilant about the use of your personal data.
