Launched less than six months ago, the new version of Apple’s operating system, iOS 17, has been adopted by a majority of iPhones. And the newer the device, the more likely it is to work with iOS 17.
Although it’s still only the beginning of the year, we can already hear about the next version of the iPhone operating system, namely iOS 18. An update that could be one of the most important of the history of the Cupertino company. But if iOS 17 is less present in the news, this version nonetheless remains particularly popular. It has in fact experienced a particularly high adoption rate since its release.
Two thirds of phones running iOS 17
“They said yes! » This is clearly what we can say by observing the figures transmitted by Apple on its website developer.apple.com. We learn that as of February 4, 2024, iOS 17, open to all smartphones launched since 2018, has been downloaded by some 66% of iPhone owners, or two thirds of the target population.
The rest of the iPhone owners aren’t far behind. Still according to the same source, the majority of those who are not on iOS 17 use iOS 16 (or 23% of all iPhones). The last 11% is shared between iOS 15 and even older versions.
The plebiscite of recent models
The statistics provided by Apple also show adoption figures for the most recent devices, namely smartphones released in the last four years. These are the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone, 14, iPhone 15 as well as the iPhone SE. As might be expected, they benefit from iOS 17 more often on average.
In fact, this time, three quarters of the affected iPhones have downloaded iOS 17 (76%). iOS 16 continues to run on 20% of the most recent iPhones, which leaves only 4% of the remaining devices still using iOS 15 or less.
