Windows 11 is finally starting to win the hearts and minds of gamers. The last investigation Steam in fact shows that the OS has increased by 4% in one month among users of the platform. The popularity of Windows 10 is gradually eroding.

The figures from the latest “Steam hardware survey” are in. We learn that, during the month of December, fewer and fewer players are content with 8 GB of RAM… but also and above all that the proportion of machines powered by Windows 10 is decreasing in favor of Windows 11 which we have elsewhere tested here.

Windows 11 gains popularity among gamers

In detail, and as reported PC Gaming, Windows 11 is now installed on 44% of PCs surveyed by Steam (and therefore on which the platform is installed), compared to 51% for Windows 10, which still remains in the majority. We note, however, that compared to the month of November, Windows 11 increased by 4%, which is not insignificant. There is a good chance that this trend will increase in 2024, with Windows 11 gaining momentum on the number of machines used by Steam users.

For context, the adoption of Windows 11 remains modest on a global scale. Because if the monthly Steam survey allows us to know what it is for players, the OS remains in the minority among other users. In the overall desktop computer market, the latest data from StatCounter tells us, for example, that only 27.8% of PCs are equipped with Windows 11, while Windows 10 remains used on 66.4% of machines.

What is the typical machine of a Steam player in December 2023?

For the rest, the Steam survey allows us to draw up, as always, a rough portrait of the “typical” computer used by PC gamers. In this case, the most common machines surveyed by the Valve platform are equipped with a 6-core processor and 16 GB of RAM.

We also discover that RTX 4000s are still little used on average, but that NVIDIA graphics cards remain (by far) the most used by Steam players. The most common model is the RTX 3060, while the majority of players are still satisfied with a 1080p definition.

Perhaps more crisp, we are finally seeing progress in VR. In December 2023, 2.24% of players with Steam actually had a virtual reality headset…. compared to only 0.4% in November. As for the most popular headset? This is, unsurprisingly, the Oculus Quest 2.

Comparison of the best operating systems (2024)

With a market share approaching 80% on desktop computers, Windows 10 is the operating system most used by the general public. Under these conditions, why ask the question of an alternative to Microsoft’s flagship?
