The American press claims that Russia has asked China to provide it with military equipment for the war and economic aid to overcome international sanctions. If Beijing denies it, the question of China’s involvement alongside its Russian ally raises many questions.

This is another war being played out behind the scenes between the two greatest powers on the planet. China and the United States, including two senior diplomats, met in Rome on Monday. It was obviously a question of Ukraine, but above all of the support that China gives to Russia. The United States accuses the communist regime of seeking to circumvent sanctions to help Moscow.

A “clear and consistent” position

Information denied by the spokesperson for Chinese diplomacy. “Recently, the United States released a series of fake news targeting China on the Ukraine issue, with malicious intent,” she pointed out. “China’s position on the Ukraine issue has been clear and consistent. We have always played a constructive role in calling for peace and negotiations.”

Washington threatens China with sanctions

Because Beijing finds itself in the dock alongside its Russian ally, accused both of continuing its trade with Moscow and of buying ever more Russian gas and oil. Washington in turn threatens China with sanctions, dragging the two countries into a new trade war that began under Donald Trump’s mandate in 2018. China thought it could bury the hatchet, but the conflict in Ukraine is changing everything.
