The European Commission is therefore asking TikTok, within the framework of European legislation on digital services (DSA), to indicate what are the risks linked to this version launched in France and Spain. The authorities mention “the stimulation of addictive behavior” in terms of the mental health of minors due to these virtual rewards.

TikTok Lite allows you to collect virtual coins if the user logs in every day, several times in a row, to watch videos for a certain duration. It is also necessary to like content and follow creators. When a person has enough change, they can exchange it for rewards like Amazon gift cards.

This game mechanism is “a known and problematic addiction-creating phenomenon”estimates Anne Cordier, professor of information and communication sciences at the University of Lorraine, interviewed by AFP.

In its defense, TikTok reminds the European Union that this system is reserved for adults whose identity has been verified with an identity document, a video selfie or a bank card authorization.

According to The Information, TikTok Lite is an attempt to inflate TikTok’s user base on the Old Continent, where its numbers are stagnating. The application is only installed on 13% of Android smartphones.
