“Acted too boldly” – baby seriously injured: detention imposed on father

After the possible abuse of a baby from the Tulln district in Lower Austria, custody has been imposed on the 21-year-old father. “The risk of committing a crime was assumed to be the reason for detention,” said Leopold Bien, spokesman for the St. Pölten public prosecutor’s office, on Monday. A preliminary investigation into continued violence is ongoing against both parents of the one-month-old baby. The 20-year-old mother was reported at large.

Bien explained to the APA that the 21-year-old is in custody and his partner is not, saying that “the suspicion is more urgent against the father than against the mother”. In general, the investigations are still in the early stages. The pre-trial detention imposed on the accused is limited to November 28th. Hospital employees filed a complaint, father and mother were taken into custody for the time being. Due to the initially life-threatening injuries, the baby was flown to the AKH in Vienna by emergency helicopter and treated there in intensive care. The infant’s health stabilized over the weekend. However, serious long-term consequences could not yet be assessed or ruled out. Custody of the child was withdrawn from the parents by the Tulln district authority. During the interrogation, the 21-year-old stated that he “acted too briskly” when handling the baby.
