  • Microsoft still plans to acquire Activision Blizzard.
  • A sum of around 68.7 billion US dollars is in the room.
  • All that is still missing is the approval of the antitrust authorities, but this could be a long time coming.

It was already clear in January 2022 that Microsoft wanted to take over gaming giant Activision Blizzard. The shareholders have now also given their approval for the deal, but the last hurdle has not yet been cleared.

Although the draft resolution received more than 98 percent in favor at a shareholders’ meeting, the deal is not yet a done deal. Before Microsoft can actually take over the games group for almost 68.7 billion US dollars, the approval of the antitrust authorities must be given.

Acceptance is not an easy matter

In the US, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is responsible for such matters. However, its head, Lina Khan, is known to be opposed to mega-corporations, so the deal may not prove easy. However, if everything goes smoothly, the takeover would take place by June 2023 at the latest and would go down in history as by far the largest takeover by Microsoft to date.

Until then, Microsoft will provide its existing products with updates, as was the case with the web app of its own store under Windows 11.
