When we talk about time travel, there are few films not to mention Back to the Future, a reference of the genre. And the feature film Shawn Levy is no exception to the rule. The two Adams thus discuss Biff’s investments in Back to the Future 2 and their dog is called Hawking, a nod to Doc’s four-legged companion in the Robert Zemeckis franchise, also named after a very famous scientist: Einstein.

Having already wielded a lightsaber in Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds uses in Adam through time a weapon deceptively similar to the sabers of the Jedi in the Star Wars saga even if his character spends his time denying the similarity. When the two Adams find their father (Mark Ruffalo) in the past, the latter is giving a class where a student wears a sweater with Nicolas Cage’s head and the inscription “John Travolta” underneath. A nod to the thriller Volte/Face by John Woo where the second takes the face of the first for a high-risk infiltration.

At one point in the film, Mark Ruffalo’s character describes himself as “the godfather of time travel,” a title that applies to Adam through time but not only. The actor has indeed participated in several time travel films, including Avengers: Endgame, of course, where Bruce Banner helps Tony Stark invent the technology capable of sending the Avengers back to the past. But also the comedy 30 years or nothing, with Jennifer Garner, who also plays his wife in the Netflix film. The circle is complete.
