In around six months, cable TV fees will disappear from additional residential costs. Then the last deadline for housing providers expires, during which the latter can still apply the so-called additional cost privilege. For tenants, this initially means savings.
According to the German Tenants’ Association, the average cable fees charged for operating costs are 12 to 14 euros per month. According to Vodafone, which claims to be the largest cable provider in Germany, they are between 7 and 9 euros. Your rent could be reduced by this amount per month in the coming year. However, this also means you no longer have access to the TV program; you now have to take action yourself and spend money. There is no free basic service when it comes to TV reception via cable.
Cable TV is not cheap – will it become even more expensive?

Cable provider Vodafone is currently advertising the TV Connect Start basic tariff to ensure that TV households stay, and can switch to any offer from July 1, 2024. For less than 10 euros, TV reception should continue as usual, without any installation or hardware replacement. Compared to the average additional cost allocation, you can potentially save 2 to 4 euros – but Vodafone binds you to the offer for 24 months.
It remains to be seen whether the prices for cable TV will increase for new customers after the additional cost privilege is finally suspended. After all, providers are currently fighting for their existing customers and are making tempting offers to keep them.
