Adhesive tape, an illegal trick used by drivers to deceive speed cameras, has never been so popular

Speed ​​control radars, soon all supported by AI, have become the sworn enemies of many drivers who like to drive, well, too fast. To escape sanctions, some are not afraid to resort to illegal methods, such as falsifying license plates (which can now be used to pay for a parking space, for example). Their tip? Use insulating tape to change the characters on their plate and fool the cameras.

The practice was recently highlighted by a case in Spain, as reported The Internet user, where a driver was arrested by Catalan police for altering his license plate with black tape. He thus transformed the letter “F” into “E”, hoping to go unnoticed on the AP-7 motorway, running along the Spanish Mediterranean coast.

In the country, the falsification of license plates is considered a criminal offense, punishable by a prison sentence of 6 to 12 months. The arrested driver risks spending time behind bars for wanting to avoid radars.

In France, the situation is no more lenient for drivers who engage in this type of manipulation. Falsifying or modifying a registration plate is also a criminal offense, which can result in a fine of up to 3,750 euros.

Severe penalties faced by drivers who falsify their license plates

Other sanctions may be added depending on the seriousness of the offense and the circumstances. For example, a 3-year driving license suspension and/or vehicle confiscation, without forgetting the consequences in the event of an accident. Insurance companies can here refuse to cover the damage caused or suffered by the fraudulent driver.

Falsifying license plates is not a new practice, but it seems to be becoming more widespread among drivers in a hurry. Duct tape is a common item, easy to obtain and use. It only takes a few seconds to change your plate and put it back the same after crossing the radar or during your next stop. A problem which would not arise if France, like certain American states, introduced the digital plate.

Let us hope, however, that the risks involved are enough to dissuade those who like to play with fire… and the police.
