Adobe revamps its applications with Spectrum 2

Adobe offers a wide range of creative support tools. If you’ve tried several, you know they all look the same. This distinctive design, known as Spectrum, is now getting a makeover with the launch of Spectrum 2.

A design that evolves with its audience

This Tuesday, Adobe unveiled Spectrum 2, the biggest update to its design system. It covers all elements of design, including iconography, typography, color, branding, illustration… and much more, according to the press release.

The objective of this redesign is to follow the evolution of the brand’s audience. When Adobe Spectrum launched – over 10 years ago – the product’s audience was primarily professionals. This is why the design was intended to be “serious”.

Today, the Creative Cloud suite is aimed at a wider audience, from children to creators and professionals. That’s why this update was designed to make the platform more accessible and inclusive, but also to enable seamless use, regardless of the platform chosen.

Adobe’s signature gray color palette will soon be a thing of the past, replaced by a more welcoming, bolder, and more approachable design.

The Spectrum 2 team has begun previewing key elements of the redesign on Adobe Express. The latter is lighter, bolder and rounder, with brighter colors, thicker strokes and friendlier icons and typography. As part of Spectrum 2, these kinds of changes will soon be rolled out across the entire Adobe lineup.

More accessible programs

To make its tools more accessible, particularly to visually impaired users, Adobe will offer dynamic contrast and brightness, more accessible colors – which take into account different vision deficiencies – and a hierarchy of attention, to give priority to specific visual elements.

To achieve this goal, the appearance of Spectrum 2 will vary from one platform to another (macOS, Windows, iOS, Android or internet).

The goal of Spectrum 2 is to make an Adobe tool comfortable on the platform and device it is used on, even if it has slight variations depending on the medium. For example, you won’t be able to use Adobe Lightroom the same way on your Android phone as you would on your MacBook. However, both versions will retain the same ergonomics.
