  • FDP President and Council of States Thierry Burkart wants to relax the regulation on the transfer of war material.
  • According to several Sunday media, he will submit a corresponding motion in Parliament next week.
  • With this, Burkart wants to ensure that countries are allowed to make independent decisions about war material that they have bought from Switzerland. This is on the condition that they share Swiss values.

Burkart is launching his request after the Federal Council decided this week on the use of several tanks and weapons. Now, in his opinion, the War Material Act should be changed.

His proposal: countries that share Switzerland’s values and have a comparable export control regime should no longer have to sign a non-re-export declaration if they buy weapons in Switzerland.

He justifies his approach to the “NZZ am Sonntag” with the events surrounding the Ukraine war: “It cannot be that countries like Germany or Denmark cannot pass on weapons that they bought 20 years ago in Switzerland , just because they need permission from us to do it.”
