Advertising is coming to Disney+ via a new subscription (and the price hurts)

the SVoD service designed by Disney is doing extremely well… But that will not prevent the American firm from reviewing its prices upwards (in a way) via the introduction of advertising within its platform.

In addition, Disney+ is taking the opportunity to double Netflix on its number of subscribers.

A service that knows no crisis

The Walt Disney Company this week unveiled its results recorded during the fiscal quarter which ended on June 30, 2022. Of course, Disney+ was widely mentioned via several big figures that look great! Starting with the number of subscribers to the service, which now stands at 152 million users. During this quarter, the platform welcomed 14.4 million more paying profiles.

An increase that contrasts sharply with the latest declines recorded by Netflix. Precisely, Disney also prides itself on having exceeded for the first time the approximately 220.67 million subscribers of the competing service. For this, Disney + compiles its 152 million subscribers to the 22.8 million users of ESPN + and the 46.2 million of Hulu. By adding it all up, we reach 221.1 million subscribers.

An offer that will divide

But what particularly interests us is the arrival of a subscription including advertising. A path that Netflix will also take in the more or less near future. Title Disney+ Basic, this offer will land in the United States on December 8th. It will cost $7.99 per month, which is the current amount of the plan without ads. The American brand estimates that the user will be entitled to four minutes of advertising per hour of viewing. Note that all the content of the service will be accessible and that some programs may not be affected by this “new feature”.

Where the rub is the fact that the classic subscription (without ads) as we know it today goes to $ 10.99 per month. This represents an increase of 38% for this formula now called Disney+ Premium. We observe in passing an increase in prices on various bundles that contain Hulu and/or ESPN+ offers.

Note that these changes are currently only valid for the United States. No information for the European market has been communicated for the moment.
