When Cristina Rosi fell into a coma, she was seven months pregnant. Now, ten months later, she has woken up and has never seen her daughter.

Italian Cristina Rosi from Tuscany was seven months pregnant when she suffered a heart attack and fell into a coma in July 2020. In order to save the life of the unborn child, the doctors had to perform an emergency caesarean section on the same day – mother and baby had already been without adequate oxygen for a long time. The result: Cristina and her little daughter Caterina survived, but both suffered neurological damage. It has been ten months since Caterina was born and her mother Cristina has finally woken from her coma.

Her first words were “mom”

Cristina’s husband, Gabriele Succi, is overjoyed that his wife has finally woken up again. “La Nazione” he said that her first words were “Mama”. “A real joy after so much suffering. Even the doctors in the room have confirmed that Cristina said her first word.” Perhaps the 37-year-old has now understood that she has become the mother of a young daughter: However, the two have never met. Due to the damage the mother and daughter suffered from the lack of oxygen, they were cared for in different wards in hospitals and received different therapies from birth. Little Caterina also needs medical care around the clock today.

Her 37-year-old mother has not been in Italy for two months, but in a hospital in Austria. There she is looked after by specialists around the clock and takes part in a neurological rehabilitation program. In the course of this, the cannula of her tracheal incision could already be removed: “My wife breathes and swallows herself,” explains Gabriele Succi. “When I see her progress and think of how she was doing a few months ago, with all the tests she had to take, it seems like a miracle.” Cristina’s mother Mirella is also hopeful: “The doctors want to get her back on her feet and are convinced of Cristina’s potential,” she says, “La Nazione”.

The fact that Cristina has awakened from her ten-month coma is the first step in a quarterly rehabilitation process. However, since she is now being treated abroad, the family is confronted with high costs: “For three months in the clinic, 104,000 euros are needed. So far we have been able to guarantee Cristina the therapies that have improved her condition. We cannot now stop, “says Gabriele Succi. To cope with the costs, he launched an appeal for donations on the GoFundMe platform: “We need everyone’s help, everyone helps as he can.”
