After the adaptations of its games Assassin’s Creed and Werewolves Within, Ubisoft returns to cinema with one of its biggest video game licenses. The Watch Dogs game will indeed be entitled to a cinematographic adaptation according to Deadlineand a Frenchman will be in charge!

A big fan of video games, particularly those of Hideo Kojima, the young director Mathieu Turi will direct the Franco-American film Watch Dogs. We already owe him the genre films Hostile, Méander and Gueules Noirs.

A project put on hold due to the strike

In project for 10 years, the film is written by Christie LeBlanc (Oxygen) and Victoria Bata. Actress Sophie Wilde, already seen in the hit horror film The Hand, is currently in negotiations to play the leading role in the adaptation.

A film that Matthew Turi already spoke to our microphone last November during the promotion of his horror film Gueules Noires.

“I have an American project that was put on hold because of the strike. We had the green light and we were in the casting phase. Unfortunately, I can’t say yet what game it is, but I pinch a little [pour le croire]…I’m very lucky to be working on this.”.

Put on standby due to the strike then raging in Hollywood, the adaptation of Watch Dogs can therefore resume. We still don’t know anything about the history of the feature film.

What is Watch Dogs?

Released on May 27, 2014 and developed by the Montreal branch of Ubisoft, Watch Dogs is a third-person stealth action game and has its roots in our modern, constantly connected society, where one click is enough to make friends and enemies. Aiden Pearce, the main character, is a hacker haunted by a tragic past and driven by a terrible thirst for revenge.

At its output, Watch Dogs broke the record for Ubisoft’s best-selling game on its first day on sale. According to the publisher, the game has sold more than 10 million copies. There are two “suites”: Watch Dogs 2 released in 2016 and Watch Dogs: Legion released in 2020.
