The first trailer for “Avatar 2” is here and shows old and new heroes. He also promises to explore the seas of Pandora for the first time.

This year (December 14) the most successful film in cinema history to date will have its first sequel: “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” by James Cameron (67). What fans of the 2009 sci-fi epic can look forward to after around 13 years of waiting shows the first trailer for the sequel nicknamed “The Way of Water”.

The trailer once again confirms what the recently revealed title and the first behind-the-scenes photos for “Avatar 2” have indicated: The name says it all for the sequel, which shows the (under)water world of Pandora in detail for the first time will. So you can look forward to unprecedented maritime sights and imaginative sea creatures from the distant planet.

But this new, visually impressive facet is by far not all that the trailer reveals. Here are a few points that some may have missed.

The Pandora patchwork family

Part two takes place over a decade after the original. During this time, the main characters of “Avatar”, former human Jake Sully (Sam Worthington, 45) and native Na’vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldana, 43), apparently pushed ahead with their family planning. The trailer shows a shot of a pregnant Neytiri, three biological children (two sons and a daughter) they are reported to have altogether.

And then there’s an adopted human named Javier “Spider” Socorro, played by Jack Champion (17). The character is known to have been born on Pandora and was apparently rescued by Jake and Neytiri shortly after birth. The trailer shows that “Spider” is in no way inferior to his blue-skinned and much taller adoptive siblings when it comes to dexterity.

Unusual return of a villain?

The “Avatar 2” casting list has already confirmed that actor Stephen Lang (69) will also be part of the party again. But how is that possible? After all, his character, antagonist Colonel Miles Quaritch, died a villain’s death in the finale of part one. A tiny detail in the sequel trailer shows how he might rise from the dead.

Because one of the Na’Vi avatars, dressed in military combat gear, has a prominent tattoo on his arm. The human soldier Quaritch had the same tattoo in the same place in the first part. So it’s quite possible that he’ll be hunting Jake and his family again in the sequel as a wannabe Na’Vi.

More old and new faces

But not only the evil believed dead returns. Also Sigourney Weaver (72), whose character Dr. Grace Augustine also died in part one is announced for the new part. And there will also be a reunion with the profit-loving greaser Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi, 47).

Meanwhile, Oscar winner and “Titanic” star Kate Winslet (46) is completely new. She embodies the Na’Vi Ronal, a member of the water-dwelling Metkayina tribe. Also joining the cast is Michelle Yeoh (59) as the human doctor Dr. Karina Mogue encountered.

The return to Pandora is far from over with a sequel. Three more sequels will follow in the coming years. If everything goes according to plan, “Avatar 5” should be the end of the series in 2028.
