After 8 weeks of evacuation – fight the snow: Free ride over the Timmelsjoch

It was the latest opening date in the last 15 years, but the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road has been open again since Thursday. For eight weeks ten men with heavy equipment cleared the 34 kilometer long road between the Tyrolean Gurgl and Moos in the Passeier (South Tyrol).

A total of 500,000 cubic meters of snow were milled and dredged from the road – that’s the equivalent of 60,000 (!) Truck loads. The High Alpine Road is now open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. until around the end of October.

“The last time we had that much snow was before 2009. In some places the snow piled up to 15 meters high. The first visitors got to see walls of snow up to five meters high, ”says Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße AG board member Manfred Tschopfer happily.
