The Federal Roads Office (Astra) still assumes that the Gotthard road tunnel can be reopened to traffic this week.
The defective false ceiling in the Gotthard road tunnel was dismantled on Tuesday night.
The necessary work was completed on Tuesday morning, Astra reported.
Work is currently underway to secure the existing ceiling elements. Construction work will then begin to replace the defective false ceiling.
A steel structure with the same cross-sectional area is installed. With this design, the functionality of the exhaust air duct can be guaranteed when the tunnel is put into operation.
In the event of a fire, the smoke is extracted from the roadway via the exhaust air duct, writes Astra. The false ceiling suffered a technical defect over a length of 25 meters on Sunday afternoon.
The cause is probably stress redistribution in the mountains
The Astra currently assumes that the cause of the damage is due to stress shifts in the mountains. There are several conceivable possibilities for this: movements in the mountain, tectonic influences or even construction work in the mountain. The Astra cannot yet conclusively name the cause(s) or a combination thereof.
The Astra states that a lot is being expected of the mountain with the structural measures for the second tube. Extensive excavation work was and is taking place for the construction of the second tube. Access tunnels and also caverns for construction site installations are being built.
