After his rough dropout, Canada’s Joe Veleno has to say goodbye to the team. A ban is imposed on him.

The assault on Nino Niederreiter has consequences for Canada’s Joe Veleno: The 23-year-old striker is banned for 5 games by the Disciplinary Committee of the International Ice Hockey Federation. In the group game against the Swiss national team, Veleno got away scot-free with a brutal kick to Niederreiter’s shin just before half-time.

He then dropped theatrically in the slot after another rencontre. It only had a penalty against Niederreiter, whereupon the Canadians took the lead. After all: Switzerland won the game 3:2.

Due to the suspension, Detroit player Veleno will miss both of the remaining group games (against Norway and the Czech Republic), the quarter-finals and possibly the semi-finals, final or bronze medal match.

Swiss Ice Hockey welcomes the decision

Fortunately, Niederreiter was uninjured, but was shocked after the unsportsmanlike action: “Such things simply do not belong in our sport. I’m sure he went in there with the intention of breaking my ankle, and that just can’t be done.”

A little later, the Swiss Ice Hockey Association announced that it agreed with the penalty. “We appreciate this decision very much and see it as a positive sign of fairness in sport,” sports director Lars Weibel is quoted as saying. “Such behavior is absolutely intolerable.”
