After a volcanic eruption off Tonga: oil spill on the Peruvian coast

Tidal waves triggered by the volcanic eruption off the coast of Tonga have triggered an oil spill in Peru, more than 10,000 kilometers away, according to authorities. The authorities blocked three oil-polluted beaches near the capital Lima on Monday (local time). According to Environment Minister Ruben Ramirez, the pollution extends over a three-kilometer-long area and the environmental damage is high.

The Pampilla oil refinery spoke of a “limited” oil spill caused by the sudden tidal waves when unloading a tanker on Saturday. According to the ministry, the refinery faces a fine of up to the equivalent of around 30 million euros.
