After Adrien Quatennens, the Julien Bayou affair plunges left-wing parties into turmoil

The embarrassment was palpable this Tuesday, September 20 at the National Assembly. About fifteen deputies from La France insoumise (LFI) had come to present the twelve texts planned for their parliamentary niche – the monthly session during which the agenda is set by the opposition deputies, not by the government – from November 24 . But they had to face questions about Adrien Quatennens, who admitted violence against his companion, and questions about the attitude of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

After having kept a low profile in relation to “new phenomena” on which ones “we are not fully equipped”MP LFI Clémentine Autain mentioned another embarrassing matter, outside her party this time. “When I hear Sandrine Rousseau [députée Europe Ecologie-Les Verts, EELV] yesterday [dire] that the ex-companion of Julien Bayou that she received herself (…) attempted suicide, I don’t know if this woman wants all of France to know that she attempted suicide,” launched the member for Seine-Saint-Denis.

Twenty-four hours after La France insoumise, here are the environmentalists caught in the turmoil. The ex-companion of the national secretary of EELV had made, in July, a report to the cell on the sexist and sexual violence of the party. The case, briefly uncovered this summer by Le Figaro, would perhaps not have had any repercussions without the declarations made by Mr.me Rousseau, Monday, in “C à vous”, on France 5. “I think that there are behaviors that are likely to break the moral health of women”, clarified the member, without however mentioning particular violence.

“Show how to manage these issues”

After the Quatennens affair, the situation was untenable. Pending the conclusions of the investigation, Julien Bayou was “removed from duty” of co-president of the environmental group in the National Assembly, announced the office of the group, Tuesday, by press release. All day, Mr. Bayou occupied the conversations of his party, first at the Palais-Bourbon, during a group meeting, then within an executive office. In the middle of the afternoon, EELV decided to publish a press release, ensuring its mobilization “in the fight against violence against women”.

Rather than dwell on the case of the first secretary, the text focused on the investigation carried out by his cell, a structure “autonomous”, “transparent” and “independent”. A way to stand out from the committee on sexist violence of LFI, suspected of operating in complete opacity.
