Ed Sheeran said in an interview after the copyright lawsuit for “Shape of You” that he will now film himself writing the song.

Ed Sheeran (31) won a copyright lawsuit against a songwriter in London’s High Court a few days ago. He and his co-writer claimed that Sheeran’s song “Shape Of You” was partially copied from one of their songs. The process has left its mark on the singer.

To protect himself from similar claims in the future, the 31-year-old has started filming all of his creative writing sessions. “I just film everything, everything is on video,” he said now in a BBC interview. Songwriting itself has also changed for the singer: “The best feeling in the world is the euphoria of the first idea of writing a great song. The feeling has changed now and you’re like, ‘Oh wait, let’s for think about it for a minute.’ You question yourself.”

Ed Sheeran: “I’m glad we can continue”

Sheeran is still “glad it’s over. I’m glad we can go on and write songs again.” The singer described the court process as lengthy and uncomfortable for everyone involved and explained that there was “no choice” but to contest the lawsuit. It wasn’t about money, it was about honesty.

Sheeran spoke out after the verdict was announced in a video statement on Twitter and Instagram about the allegations. “Unfounded” copyright claims are therefore harmful to the songwriting industry. “I’m not a company. I’m a person,” he said. “I’m a father, I’m a husband, I’m a son. Lawsuits are not a pleasant experience and I hope that with this ruling, baseless claims like this can be avoided in the future. This really needs to end.”
