Holsteins Sander has heart muscle inflammation

A corona infection and signs of heart muscle inflammation put Bavaria’s Alphonso Davies out of action for months. Now second division professional Philipp Sander is also being diagnosed with heart problems. Another Bayern player is also out due to Corona.

Second division soccer team Holstein Kiel will have to do without Philipp Sander until further notice. As the club announced, the central midfielder was diagnosed with a mild myocarditis during follow-up examinations after his corona infection. It is not yet clear how long the 24-year-old will be out.

The case shows “how important comprehensive medical support is after a corona infection,” said the Kiel sports director Uwe Stöver: “We know about the dangers and are aware of our responsibility towards each individual. A cardiological examination is included obligatory for us.” The most important thing is that Sander completely recovers from his illness and then slowly recovers under medical supervision, emphasized Stöver.

At the beginning of the year, signs of heart muscle inflammation were found in Bayern’s full-back Alphonso Davies after a corona infection. The Canadian had to take a break since mid-January, last week he completed part of the team training again. In an interview published on the FC Bayern Munich website on Saturday, he spoke about his regeneration. “I don’t have any problems with my muscles and heart, but I’m not at 100 percent – yet!”

With the German record champions, the next player is now out due to the corona. Attacker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting tested positive for the corona virus again. As his club announced, the 33-year-old is in domestic isolation. He’s fine. The offensive player from FC Bayern Munich, who qualified with Cameroon for the World Cup in Qatar this week, was already infected with the virus in November last year. Choupo-Moting is therefore out for the Bundesliga away game at SC Freiburg next Saturday.
