The sale of games The Last of Us recorded a triple-digit rise in the UK last week, and no doubt elsewhere.
No need to be an expert in mycology to see the contagious influence of a certain adaptation produced by HBO, whose undeniable success continues to grow with each episode… like a certain mushroom.
Games The Last of Us are spreading like mushrooms
Our colleagues from GamesIndustry.biz shared the results of last week’s game sales in physical format in the United Kingdom, a country that is particularly transparent on this point. In particular, we learn that Fire Emblem Engage rises to first place on the podium, dethroning the tireless Fifa annual.
But the most notable changes in this ranking are found at 20e and at the 32e squares. Respectively, The Last of Us Part I, the PS5 version of the original game, has indeed recorded a jump of 238% in its physical format, while the PS4 version has experienced a 322% increase in sales in the same format. We bet that such a phenomenon concerns other countries, in the absence of verifiable data.
We certainly owe this strong renewed interest to the broadcast of the first episode of the series overseen by HBO, available in France since last Monday on Prime Video.
Adaptations to contagious infatuation
The second episode of the series co-directed by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann was also released overnight. The spectators then visibly rushed to the review sites like infected people hearing a noise. On IMDB in particular, said episode currently has more than 7,000 user reviews, with a very nice score of 9.5/10.
The enthusiasm around this highly anticipated series therefore continues to swell and, as Cyberpunk 2077 with Netflix anime Edgerunners, leads to an effect of communicating vessels around the games from which it is taken. Some veterans have thus wanted to see what gives the first opus in a remastered version for the PS5, and those who have discovered The Last of Us with the series wanted to test the source material.
HBO, Sony and Naughty Dog therefore seem to have hit the jackpot with this adaptation of The Last of Us. Anyway, it launches (pardon us the expression) a year 2023 visibly rich in films and major series on wheel mushrooms.
