After disappointing financial results, Ubisoft pushes back Skull & Bones again

The year is off to a strong start at Ubisoft, which unveils new financial objectives. With a not very glorious end to the year, and a Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope which has not achieved the expected results, the box needs to restructure its projects. Three games that were not announced are thus canceled, while Skull & Bones sees its release date pushed back further.

Despite a very active advertising campaign, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope did not achieve the defined objectives. Just Dance 2023, with a well-established community, did not shine for the end of 2022 either. Suffice to say that the joy is not there, and that drastic measures have been taken. The Research and Development sector on the next premium and free-to-play games, including those canceled, is cut by 500 million dollars, while Skull & Bones undergoes a new postponement.

Once again, it would be the desire to perfect the experience that would have motivated this decision. If there is probably some truth in this, it is clear that the budget cuts to come have a lot to do with it. The game is thus scheduled for the beginning of the 2023-2024 fiscal year, giving hope for a release for the month of April at the earliest. But nothing can guarantee this, as many postponements may still take place.

With this press release, Ubisoft obviously seeks to justify this postponement while presenting its objectives. But in the end, it raises many questions about events internally. Between a game that is undergoing a sixth postponement, three dead projects in the bud in addition to those canceled earlier in 2022, it all seems very chaotic. However, Yves Guillemot does not seem worried about the future.
