After “Darkman” and “Spider-Man”, and while his “Doctor Strange 2” will be in our theaters at the beginning of May, Sam Raimi is obviously not tired of superheroes. And he dreams of attacking Batman.
On May 4, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters. This is Sam Raimi’s fifth superhero film, after Darkman and his Spider-Man trilogy. Considering the director as a specialist in the genre, which he helped revive in the early 2000s, is therefore not an exaggeration. And everything suggests that he is not tired of it yet.
In an interview given to Empirewhich puts the new Doctor Strange on the cover, the director evokes the superhero who makes him dream: “I’ve always loved Batman”he answers to the English magazine. “If I saw the Bat Signal in the sky, I would come running.”
Currently in the hands of Matt Reeves, who more than seduced with his reboot released at the beginning of March, Batman is not the only one Sam Raimi would like to seize: “If I heard The Shadow’s deep laughter [adapté au cinéma en 1994 avec Alec Baldwin, ndlr], I would also try my luck. And Spider-Man would be number one ahead of Doctor Strange, but I don’t want to cross him off my list.”
MISSED MEETING IN GOTHAM
So maybe… If it is very difficult to imagine, already, another director than Matt Reeves taking the destiny of the Bat Man in hand, the prospect of seeing Sam Raimi lean on the DC icon is obviously appealing. And it would be, for the director, the opportunity to make up for a missed appointment in the mid-90s, when his name was mentioned to replace Tim Burton at the controls of Batman Forever.
John McTiernan would also have been in the running, but it was Joel Schumacher who inherited the project for the result that we know. Three decades later, will Sam Raimi end up setting up his cameras in Gotham City, and joining Bryan Singer or James Gunn among the filmmakers to have distinguished themselves at Marvel and DC?
