Director Denis Villeneuve has now confirmed that the acclaimed sci-fi film series would definitely end with a potential third “Dune” film.

On February 29th, “Dune: Part 2”, the eagerly awaited sequel to “Dune” from 2021, will appear in German cinemas. Director Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”, 56) has already spoken in the past about his intention to turn the sci-fi film series into a trilogy, which he should be given the opportunity to do if the second “Dune” film is successful . But after that it will be over, like Villeneuve is now confirmed in a new interview with Time.

“Dune 4” will not come

The “Dune” film series is based on the legendary novels by Frank Herbert (1920-1986). The American, who died in 1986, published a total of seven parts during his lifetime – starting with “Dune” from 1965, which filmmaker Villeneuve divided into two films.

Herbert’s follow-up work “Dune Messiah” is to be adapted in a potential third film, but this “should be the last ‘Dune’ film for me,” Villeneuve told Time.

Clear plan for “Dune 3”

The filmmaker said the script for “Dune 3” was almost finished revealed last December. Actress and singer Zendaya (27), who can be seen in the previous two parts alongside leading actor Timothée Chalamet (28), would return for the conclusion of the trilogy without hesitation. “Every time Denis calls, I answer ‘Yes,'” Zendaya said a few days ago in conversation with “Fandango”.

The praised Villeneuve also has a clear plan for “Dune 3”, as he did “Empire” declared in August last year. According to the director, original author Herbert responded to a misinterpretation of “Dune” by many readers with “Dune Messiah”. They had perceived the main character, Paul Atreides (Chalamet), as a hero. But that wasn’t what Herbert intended for Villeneuve. “My adaptation is closer to his idea that ‘Dune’ is more of a warning,” said the filmmaker.
