- In the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo, both sides have shown willingness to approach each other.
- They have accepted an EU proposal for the normalization of relations, as EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said after mediation talks in Brussels.
- Further negotiations are now necessary to implement the agreement, which could be completed by the end of March.
According to Borrell, both sides vowed not to take any unilateral measures that could lead to tensions and jeopardize the agreement. Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti have shown responsible behavior.
“This agreement is intended primarily for the citizens of Kosovo and Serbia,” said Borrell. Among other things, it provides that people can move freely between Kosovo and Serbia with their passports, ID cards and number plates. It could open up new economic opportunities and entail further investments in Kosovo and Serbia.
In addition, it will promote trade, since the certificates that were previously required for imports and exports are no longer necessary. The rights of Serbs in Kosovo should be better protected.
The ongoing dispute between the former Yugoslav republic of Serbia and its former province of Kosovo is an obstacle on the way for both states to join the European Union. Serbia refuses to recognize Kosovo’s independence. Tensions with the Serbian minority in northern Kosovo have repeatedly arisen.
