After incidents – now “beggar raids” on Vienna’s Advent markets

Huge fuss about organized gangs at the Vienna Advent markets. After various incidents, the city of Vienna takes action together with the police.

No sooner have the Vienna Christmas markets opened than there is a huge fuss. Organized gangs of beggars graze the stalls and relieve punch drinkers and strollers – we reported. Now the city of Vienna is reacting. “Together with the police, we are now taking specific priority measures. On the markets themselves and other busy places like Mariahilfer Strasse,” explains a spokesman for the municipal administration. That also seems necessary. Beggars hold a cup under the nose of mothers who have bought their children something to collect change. Or much more disgusting: At the town hall square, thieves are aiming for the cups of partying visitors. They steal them at a careless moment and collect the four euros per cup. If they are caught beforehand and asked about it by those who have been robbed, they quickly lick the glass with their tongue and claim that they have Corona. Of course nobody wants the cup back. Aggressive and intrusive begging is forbidden in Vienna. Likewise, no dogs or children may be used to open the hearts of people willing to donate. This is not always followed. So now the action sharp.
