The filmmaker will reunite with DiCaprio for the 7th time in Les Naufragés du Wager. This is the adaptation of a book by David Grann, already author of The American Notethe work that inspired Killers of the Flower Moon.

Last year, Apple acquired the rights (for several million dollars according to the specialized press) to his new book, The Wager Shipwrecks, available since April in the United States and published in August in France. The acclaimed novel remained the 3rd best seller in the essays category, fourteen weeks after its publication.

According to the New York Times, the book has already sold tens of thousands of copies, topping their bestseller list. Former President Barack Obama also included it on his traditional summer reading list.

David Grann is now famous for being a great specialist in historical investigations. He is also considered one of the masters of literary journalism. In 2016, he had already broken all records after selling the rights to Killers of the Flower Moon to Apple TV for $5 million.

What is Les Naufragés du Wager about?

Based on a true story, Les Naufragés du Wager takes place in 1740. Her Majesty’s ship of the line, HMS Wager, with 250 officers and crew on board, is sent into a squad under the command of Commodore Anson on a secret mission to plunder the cargoes of a Spanish Empire galleon. After passing Cape Horn, the Wager was shipwreck.

A handful of unfortunate people survive on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia. With chaos and deaths piling up, and faced with the near absence of vital resources and hostile conditions, some resort to cannibalism, mutinies break out, and the captain commits a murder in front of witnesses. Three groups clash over the strategy to adopt to escape.

While everyone believed that the entire crew of the Wager had disappeared, a first group of 29 survivors reappeared in Brazil 283 days after the maritime disaster. Then three more survivors reached Brazil 3 and a half months later.

But once they return to Anglican lands, another war begins, stories this time, in order to save his honor and his life in front of the Admiralty and the general public. “Based on the logbooks of the captains and a gunner who handled both the pen and the artillery, this fascinating story can be devoured like a marine thriller, with your teeth clinging to the rail”, writes Sophie Creuz in L’Echo.

This story, which promises to be captivating brought to the big screen by Scorsese, does not yet have a release date announced. This is not the only project in the hands of the director, who also plans to make another film about Jesus, almost 40 years after The Last Temptation of Christ.

Note that the artist raised the possibility of co-directing if unfortunately he was not able to go the distance at his age. Interviewed by IndiewireScorsese confided that he was going “working with screenwriters and seeing what they could put down on paper.”

“And maybe I could co-direct the film, so to speak. It will be difficult to shoot a ‘feature film on water,’ but there are technical ways to make it bearable. It will depend on the how we will develop the scenario.”

Marty adds in conclusion that he is not sure what role he wants to offer DiCaprio because there is “lots of good characters”.
