At an official event in mid-May, King Charles III (75) unveiled his first official portrait as king at Buckingham Palace in London. The first painting of the British monarch since his coronation on May 6, 2023 was not well received by everyone due to its predominantly fiery red color and was associated with “blood” or “hell.” Now a new painting by Charles’ daughter-in-law, Princess Kate (42), is causing a stir.

The British magazine Tatler has his new cover for the July issue, which will be published on May 30. It features: “A portrait of Her Royal Highness by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor,” it says on Instagram. The current portrait follows the platinum jubilee cover of Queen Elizabeth II in the July 2022 issue of Tatler and the coronation cover of King Charles III in July 2023, it further explains.

“She really did justice to her role – she was born for it,” enthuses the artist about Princess Kate in an accompanying interview. “She wears it with such dignity, elegance and grace.” The inspiration for the painting was the princess’s appearance in November 2022, when she attended the first state banquet of the reign of King Charles III. The 42-year-old shone in a white robe by Jenny Packham with silver glitter appliqués on the shoulders. She wore the “Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot” tiara, a favorite piece of jewelry of her late mother-in-law Princess Diana (1961-1997), with the floor-length dress. The tiara is over 100 years old and was originally commissioned by Queen Mary from the jeweler Garrard around 1914.

The painting with a blue background and Kate in her white robe is not only causing excitement in the comments under the Instagram post. The similarity to Prince William’s wife (41) is particularly questioned. “I really respect the artist, but I don’t see Kate here,” writes one user. “Is this a joke?”, “Was this done by a child?” or “That’s just absurd” are other comments.

In another posting The portraits of the Queen and Charles are also shown, which some users use for comparison. One comment reads: “The previous two drawings/paintings were much better. Kate deserves a better picture. But it’s definitely a nice tribute.”
