Following the resignation of Klaus Luger (SPÖ), the mayor of Linz must be re-elected. While the red candidate Dietmar Prammer is in no hurry and wants to hold the election next year, the ÖVP, FPÖ and Greens – who have the majority in the municipal council – are pushing things forward by “joining forces”.
In a joint letter, all members of the city senate and municipal council representatives from the ÖVP, FPÖ and Greens have written to Deputy Mayor Karin Hörzing (SPÖ). Starting next Monday, she will temporarily take over the agenda of Klaus Luger, who stumbled over the Brucknerhaus lies affair, and as such will make the decision on the date of the new election. Desired date: December 8thIn the letter, the three factions, which together form the majority in the municipal council, are calling for December 8th as the election date. According to information from the state of Upper Austria, this is also the earliest possible date on which the municipal ballot can be scheduled, according to a press release on Thursday. Prammer wants more timeDietmar Prammer, who wants to succeed Luger as mayor as the SPÖ candidate, has already announced that he is in no hurry with the election date and does not want to vote until 2025. The current planning councillor would like to have as much time as possible to increase his profile among the people of Linz. “Prevent a long election campaign” The ÖVP, FPÖ and Greens are concerned with “preventing a long election campaign”. They believe that an election date in Advent is better than a “week-long delay over the holidays”. The appeal of the three factions to Hörzing: “Please listen to the elected majority in this city, which demands stability for Linz!” The two Neos councillors also joined the call for an election on December 8th on Thursday. This means that at least 35 of the 61 councillors are in favour of this date. Hörzing herself has not yet spoken out on the election date. She said in a press release that she would not deal with the wishes of the council factions until next week.
