After Oppenheimer and before Peaky Blinders and 28 years later, Cillian Murphy signs for a Scorsesian film

In “Blood Runs Coal”, Cillian Murphy will once again play a man who really existed, a role which should, as usual, fit him like a glove…

Nothing can stop Cillian Murphy! In addition to winning the Best Actor award at the 96th Academy Awards for his leading role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, also awarded, the actor is already announced in a multitude of projects.

In addition to a Peaky Blinders film and 28 years later, a sequel to his cult 28 Days Later with Danny Boyle still directing and Alex Garland handling the screenplay, he will return to Universal Studios, distributor ofOppenheimerfor another “Martin Scorsese-style” period drama, Blood Runs Coal, which does not yet have a director announced.

Indeed, according to Deadline, two days before Cillian Murphy does not win its golden statuette, Universal has acquired the rights to the book Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America by Mark A. Bradley, published in 2020, of which the film will be an adaptation.

What is it about ?

Blood Runs Coal takes place in the late 1960s in the coal mines of Pennsylvania and chronicles one of the most infamous crimes in American labor union history. Jock Yablonski was a second-generation coal miner who became an activist in the United Mine Workers union after his father died in a mine explosion. Known for fighting for safety, better working conditions and health benefits for his colleagues, he was targeted by Tony Boyle, a corrupt union leader who murdered him, his wife and his daughter, before he has a chance to unseat him in an election. Jock’s son, Chip Yablonski, a lawyer by profession, alongside his brother Kenneth, then made it his mission to bring justice to his father, mother and sister.

The film will be written by veteran screenwriters Jez Butterworth (Spectre, Le Mans 66) and John-Henry Butterworth (Get On Up, Indiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny) and produced specifically for Cillian Murphy who will therefore play Chip Yablonski, a role which seems perfectly suited to him, the actor excelling in period films and series.

After his Oscar for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy will return to his (other) best role

Yablonski’s infamous murder sparked one of the most intensive and successful manhunts in FBI history and also inspired workers in other unions to rise up and challenge their own leaders.

While waiting to discover Cillian Murphy in his next projects, the actor can be found in Oppenheimer, still showing in a few remaining cinemas or available for streaming on MyCanal.
