Traffic lights agreed: Heating law before the summer break

The controversial heating law is to be finally dealt with before the summer break. According to ntv information, party leaders from the SPD, Greens and FDP discussed this at a confidential meeting.

The controversial heating law is to be passed by the Bundestag and Bundesrat before the summer break. According to RTL/ntv information, the three party leaders of the SPD, Greens and FDP discussed this at a confidential meeting. Above all, Greens leader Omid Nouripour and FDP leader Christian Lindner agreed not to allow any further delays. The reputation of the coalition was damaged enough by the violent dispute. This means that the way seems clear for the law to be finally dealt with in the Bundestag and Bundesrat by July 7th at the latest.

A heated discussion about the project had arisen in the last few weeks, which also damaged the reputation of the traffic light coalition to the outside world. The Greens have recently suffered severe falls in opinion polls. Leading FDP politicians have repeatedly said that they do not expect the heating law to be passed before the summer break. Economics Minister Robert Habeck demanded exactly that.

The original plans for the “Building Energy Act” in Germany stipulated that from 2024 newly installed heating systems (with some exceptions) must be operated with 65 percent renewable energy. However, the FDP called for more “technology openness” in the project and would like, among other things, that gas or oil heating systems based on hydrogen or synthetic fuels, for example, can continue to be installed.

The parliamentary summer break in the Bundestag begins on July 7th – this is also the date on which the Bundesrat meets for the last time. The next meeting will not take place until the beginning of September.
