ProtonMail announced the arrival of two of its flagship features, ProtonCalendar and ProtonDrive, on its Tor site.
In addition, account creation was added to the site and the company reiterated its support for the Tor project by contributing financially.
Improved onion service
Since 2017, ProtonMail has had a .onion site, i.e. a site accessible only via the Tor network. The aim was to preemptively circumvent the censorship operated by certain governments, which proved to be beneficial since the service has since been blocked in Turkey, Belarus and Russia. While it is possible to visit a website using its usual URL via Tor, using the onion versions of the services has several advantages. Browsing is more anonymized, as traffic does not leave the Tor network, and more secure. But until then, features present on the common version of ProtonMail were missing from its onion service.
A lack now filled, following a major update announced on April 20. End-to-end encrypted calendar and cloud storage features – ProtonCalendar and ProtonDrive respectively – are now accessible and usable from the company’s onion service. Also, the design of the site has been redesigned to match that of the classic web application.
ProtonMail provides financial support to the Tor project
Another major improvement, Tor users can now create a ProtonMail account directly on the onion version of the service. With this addition, probably the most important, it is possible to use all of the secure messaging without having to access the classic web application.
But the company did not stop there.
