Vladimir Putin is once again causing a stir with statements about Russia’s nuclear arsenal. The Kremlin repeatedly asserts that it only uses nuclear weapons when the country is in danger. There are good reasons to doubt this representation – but the USA currently does not believe in the use of nuclear weapons.
According to a spokeswoman, the US government has no indication that Russia intends to use nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war. The White House has no indication “that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine,” spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told journalists on board the presidential plane Air Force One.
In an interview, Russian President Vladimir Putin previously praised Russia’s nuclear arsenal and warned that he would be prepared to use nuclear weapons if Russia’s sovereignty was threatened. In doing so, Putin apparently merely “repeated the Russian nuclear weapons doctrine,” commented Jean-Pierre. This has been known for a long time and mainly envisages the use of nuclear weapons if “Russia is in danger” and is attacked. Ex-President Medvedev once spoke of the “defense of territorial integrity”, i.e. the preservation of Russian national territory.
However, with the war in Ukraine, Russia has proven that it will attack even when there is no threat of attack – and, if necessary, construct a threat to the country in order to justify its own aggression.
Shortly after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, Vladimir Putin lied and said, among other things, “We were simply left with no other option to defend Russia and our people than the one we have to resort to today.” Ukraine posed no threat to Russian territory, nor is there any evidence of allegations from Moscow that Kiev was oppressing people of Russian origin.
The “nuclear rhetoric” of the government in Moscow since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine two years ago has been “reckless and irresponsible,” emphasized the White House spokeswoman. Kremlin representatives have brought up the use of nuclear weapons several times in the past two years.
