After scooters, Niu launches a carbon fiber two-wheeler

Well established in the electric scooter market, Niu is struggling against Xiaomi in the electric scooter segment. With its two new models, the Niu KQi Air X and KQi Air, the brand presents two ultra-light urban scooters thanks to the massive use of carbon fiber.

Scooters under 12 kg

As in cars, the use of this material makes it possible to significantly lighten the assembly while improving resistance and durability. However, this is usually expensive. It doesn’t matter since the bet pays off: the Niu KQi Air X and KQi Air display 11.7 and 11.9 kg respectively on the scale.

The difference in mass between these two models is easily explained. The top-of-the-line KQi Air X uses exclusively carbon fiber in its chassis, while its little sister combines carbon fiber (70%) and magnesium (30%).

In practice, a reduced weight makes it easier to handle and carry the scooter, especially for urban owners who will have to fold it up to take public transport or climb stairs.

Connected and efficient

In addition to their different frames, the new Niu scooters adopt the same technical configuration. The 350 W motor (700 W peak) allows a maximum speed of 32 km/h (limited to 25 km/h in France), while the range is increased to 45 km thanks to 21700 batteries with a capacity of total of 451.2 Wh (charge in 5 hours).

To improve comfort, they have a wide 19 cm top. The wheels are 9.5-inch solid elements that are insensitive to punctures, which are unfortunately common in urban areas.

Finally, the Niu KQi Air X and KQi Air are connected to the smartphone using the companion app. It is thus possible to unlock your scooter via an NFC card or smartphone, but also to configure your steed by adjusting the start mode, the level of acceleration or the level of regenerative braking.

Price and availability

Barely presented, the Niu KQi Air X and KQi Air scooters will be available for pre-order from September 19, 2023 at respective prices of $1,399 and $949, the difference being explained by the use of carbon. After this pre-order bonus, the price will increase to $1799 and $1399. For comparison, its main competitors Xiaomi 4 Ultra and Ninebot Kickbooster Max G2 are marketed at €999 and €899, but are also twice as massive. Whether the weight difference is worth the extra pennies is up to you.
