Square Enix sells Tomb Raider and Deus Ex
The news spread like wildfire in the gaming world: The Japanese publisher Square Enix has had enough of its Western brands and is selling a large part to the Swedish company Embracer Group. The round $300 million package includes the rights to Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs and the stealth series Thief.
In the context of this report, however, one piece of news in particular aroused great interest among the Internet community: is the Canadian developer studio Eidos Montréal working on the said deal on a new Deus Ex game?
Some well-known Twitter users started the rumor, and now it’s being passed off as fact in places. In fact, Embracer or Eidos still got Montréal no official announcement made to that effect.
How likely is Deus Ex to return?
The Deus Ex brand has been around since the last offshoot, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in 2016, practically dead. Although the cyberpunk role-playing game received good reviews, publisher Square Enix was unhappy with the sales figures, which is why the brand was subsequently put on hold.
However, fans have never given up on Deus Ex and have always hoped for a comeback. That could actually happen now. Because even if nothing is official yet, the Embracer Group will traditional video game brands yes bought with a specific intention.
