  • After the riots by supporters of Brazil’s ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva fired the army chief.
  • General Julio Cesar de Arruda has been dismissed from his post, which will now be taken over by General Tomas Miguel Ribeiro Paiva.
  • This was initially reported by Brazilian media in unison. This was later confirmed by the Ministry of Defense.

Ribeiro Paiva was previously commander of the Southeast Command based in São Paulo. He had said in a video that the election results had to be respected in order to guarantee democracy.

1,500 arrested after storming Congress

On January 8, supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro, who had just been replaced by Lula, stormed Congress, the seat of government and the Supreme Court in Brasília, causing extensive damage.

Many supporters do not want to recognize the victory of the new President Lula in the October election. Because they suspect fraud because of the close election result, they repeatedly call for military intervention.
