The candidacy of the former Keeper of the Seals, formalized on Saturday in Lyon, was freshly welcomed by its competitors on the left. Socialists and ecologists deplore the “confusion” brought by Christiane Taubira in the presidential campaign.
Union, how many divisions? After formalizing her presidential candidacy in Lyon on Saturday, Christiane Taubira received, without much surprise, acidic comments from her competitors. “Rather than uniting, the candidacy of Christiane Taubira will further separate, divide and create confusion”, squeaked this Sunday the socialist candidate Anne Hidalgo, in the Sunday newspaper. “The page is turned”, concluded the socialist councilor, invited at midday on the set of BFM TV, assuring in passing that now the candidates on the left will compete “project versus project.”
The environmental candidate Yannick Jadot, invited at the same time by the “Grand Jury” RTL-Le Figaro-LCI, for his part, again dismissed any question relating to the union of the left. “It’s their subject, it’s not mine”, he launched to the socialists. Criticizing a “war within the old left” Who “today settles its accounts on the quinquennium Holland”, the MEP reiterated his desire to see an environmentalist presidential candidate.
The union, “only chance” of victory
Less than three months from the first round, the left is unable to get out of the spiral of disunity. Everyone leads their boat, repeating that the proposals for union have already been put on the table. All ensure that the chances of victory are slim if the candidacies multiply on the starting line. “The left’s only chance is unity”, Taubira said again on Saturday evening, on the set of France 2. The former deputy for Guyana therefore chose to go through the box of the Popular Primary, a citizens’ initiative which has been trying to unite the chapels of the left for a year and half. Without much success.
No strong candidate on the left will participate in the popular Primary. Anne Hidalgo resigned herself to it, after having tried to call her comrades to be part of it. Yannick Jadot and Jean-Luc Mélenchon have always said that they would not go. What value will the voice of some 120,000 registered activists have, who will vote on January 27 and 30? None, we repeat in the presidential stables on the left. “The popular primary is no longer a primary, but a consultation, thus slices Hidalgo in the JDD. Citizens will rate all the candidates, whether or not they agree with this process. And after ? No candidate will withdraw because they have been misclassified! Me no more than the others.”
The mayor of Paris assures her, she will go all the way. She has already handed over to the environmental candidate, Yannick Jadot. “I was ready to put myself in danger, she concedes in the columns of the JDD. I wanted to win this primary but I could also have lost it. If that had been the case, I would have supported the winner. The Socialist Party lined up behind the Greens? This is what the boss of the socialists, Olivier Faure, advocated for a time, before changing his mind. Even if internal doubts flourish, Hidalgo will therefore chart his course. And ensures that it will not cross that of Taubira.
