After The 3 Musketeers: Pierre Niney in a cape and dagger film that will make the event in cinemas in 2024

In France, it officially started on April 5 of this year, the day of the release of the 3 Musketeers: D’Artagnan, the first brick of our hexagonal DCU: the Dumas Cinematic Universe.

On this side of the Atlantic, the company does not yet have an official name. And maybe she never will. But this acronym suits him as much as a glove in the hands of D’Artagnan and his friends. Like Warner with the DC catalogue, Pathé leans on the great heroes of local literature to give birth to films with great spectacle.

During the promotion of Martin Bourboulon’s feature film, the cast did not hesitate to describe the characters as “French superheroes”. Term that we find precisely in the note of intent of the next adaptation of the Count of Monte-Cristo, written and directed by the duo Alexandre De La Patellière – Mathieu Delaporte (already authors of the script of the 3 Musketeers) and carried by Pierre Niney.

While the second part of The 3 Musketeers, Milady, is expected in our theaters on December 13 of this year, The Count of Monte-Cristo will turn in the second half for a release scheduled for October 23, 2024. The only actor in the cast for the moment , Pierre Niney announces the color: “The ambition and the strength of the project oblige us as much as they inspire us. We want to create a great film of adventure, of characters but above all… of revenge.”

Even if it has been adapted less than The 3 Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo has been the subject of around thirty transpositions on the small and big screen. The most recent is the American one from 2002 with Jim Caviezel, while Josée Dayan’s mini-series with Gérard Depardieu remains one of the most famous.

Written by Alexandre Dumas, with the collaboration of Auguste Maquet, and published in episodic form between 1844 and 1846, The Count of Monte-Cristo is inspired by a news item and recounts Edmond Dantès’ revenge against his friends who killed him. wrongly imprisoned him, when he was about to get engaged, by passing him off as a conspirator in the pay of Napoleon Bonaparte.

A revenge that he exerts in particular by endorsing the identity of different characters. Including the title Count of Monte Cristo. Unless there is a change of era in the story, no character from the 3 Musketeers should however appear in the film, because the adventures of D’Artagnan take place in 1625, under Louis XIII. And those of Edmond Dantès in 1815, when Louis XVIII was in power.

THE FOLLOWING IN IDEAS?

The Dumas Cinematic Universe that is currently being built should therefore not be a shared universe. This will not prevent him from forming a coherent whole with common talents in key positions (Alexandre De La Patellière and Mathieu Delaporte, to begin with) and a unity of tone and ambition. Nor to follow up on certain films.

This is what Alexandre Dumas had done with his 3 Musketeers by offering them two additional adventures: “20 years later” And “The Viscount of Bragelonne”, which returns to the famous story of the mysterious man in the iron mask, adapted in 1998 with Leonardo DiCaprio. If success is there, D’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis will not only be the spearheads of this wave of re-readings: they will also be recurring players.
