A console in 6-inch format with a Mendocino APU which promises to be much more accessible than its big sister AYANEO2 equipped with a Ryzen 6000.
A little less than two weeks after formalizing the AYANEO2, equipped with a Ryzen 7 6800U, AYANEO unveils the AYANeo Air Plus. This version of the console will not ship a Ryzen 6000 Rembrandt processor, but a Mendocino APU.
APU Mendocino: Zen 2 + RDNA 2
AMD unveiled this line of processors last week at Computex 2022. Like the Steam Deck’s Aerith SoC, these APUs combine Zen 2 CPU cores and RDNA 2 graphics cores.
These processors presented as cheap by AMD have four CPU cores, while the Ryzen 6000 Rembrandt have up to eight; furthermore, it is Zen 3+ CPU cores for these.
On the other hand, they benefit from AMD’s latest graphics architecture, RDNA 2. This will boost the graphics performance of the iGPU of APUs; the latter used until recently the aging Vega architecture.
A more attractive price
While many have presented the AYANEO2 as a Steam Deck killer, this opposition omits one glaring difference: the price. While the Steam Deck are trading between 419 euros and 679 euros depending on the version, the AYANEO cost between 1000 and 1300 euros approximately. The price of the AYANEO2 remains unknown at this time, but the amount required will likely be a four-digit number. In short, it’s a bit like comparing a Tesla Model Y with a Twingo…
With its starting price of 289 dollars, the AYANEO Air Plus promises to be much more competitive than the AYANEO2.
Unfortunately, the specifications of the AYANEO Air Plus revealed are very brief at the moment. Besides the Mendocino APU, the company simply mentioned a 1080p display with a 6-inch diagonal and the use of a classic M.2 2280 SSD for storage. We do not know what capacities will be offered, as well as the amount of RAM in particular.
The release date is unknown. However, given that the Mendocino APUs will only be available from the fourth quarter of 2022, we should not expect to see the AYANEO Air Plus arrive before the end of the year.
