After the departure of Martin Hirsch, a delicate succession opens at the head of the hospitals of Paris

He decided to hang up the gloves. And the announcement caused a stir in the medical world, but also in politics. After nine years at the head of the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), Martin Hirsch made public, Friday, June 17, his departure from the management of the Ile-de-France hospital juggernaut, at the end of the month. Arrived in 2013, the 58-year-old State Councilor gave up his duties in a context of unprecedented crisis in the hospital, the shortage of caregivers leading many establishments to close beds for months.

In March 2020, at the heart of the Covid-19 crisis, he notably promised to “to make sure that the ‘after’ hospital is not the ‘before’ hospital”. It is officially because he considers himself unable to keep this commitment today, the conditions not being met on the side of the government as well as the hospital community, that the senior official has decided to “put his post of director general of the AP-HP at the disposal of the government”he explained to World.

Refusing to believe in a voluntary departure of Mr. Hirsch, some in the medical world see it above all as the hand of the executive. The appointment of Aurélien Rousseau, former director of the regional health agency of Ile-de-France to the post of director of the cabinet of Elisabeth Borne, in Matignon, would not be totally foreign to it. A version totally denied by Mr. Rousseau, who claims to have ” absolutely not ” played a role in the departure of Martin Hirsch. “We have always worked together in trust and I can say it in friendship”, he explains. Other sources, in the corridors of the AP-HP, say that the decision, taken a month ago, would come from the Elysée.

” My decision “

A version that the executive does not confirm, without however being surprised by the announcement of the departure of Mr. Hirsch, also considered as “information already known” in the medical world, where the rumor circulated. At the top of the state, we are also working to minimize the scope of this announcement, presenting it as a non-event. “Martin Hirsch had been in his position for nine years. There may be a phenomenon of wear at home. That administrations change governance, it happens”, sweeps away an adviser to the executive, while the name of the former director of cabinet of Jean Castex at Matignon, Nicolas Revel, circulates to replace him at the head of the AP-HP. The latter is already very well known in the world of health, in particular in the ranks of liberal doctors: he directed the National Health Insurance Fund from 2014 to 2020 before being appointed director of the cabinet of Mr. Castex, as Emmanuel Macron wished.
