The freight train that derailed in the Gotthard base tunnel on August 10 is unlikely to be completely recovered until the end of September.
It will take several months for the damage in the tunnel to be repaired, SBB said in the Ticino town of Faido.
The SBB has not yet provided any information about the damage or how long the repairs will take.
A total of 16 freight cars derailed in the accident. The SBB announced that there are currently eight cars in the tunnel. Several cars were so badly damaged that they had to be dismantled at the scene of the accident.
The wrecked cars are removed from the 57-kilometer tunnel via the south portal. This is 15 kilometers from the scene of the accident. The SBB announced that a temporary track had been created for the rescue.
The SBB has not yet provided any information on the extent of the damage and how long the repair work will take. 90 freight trains are currently running through the undamaged east tube of the base tunnel every day. Passenger trains will continue to be diverted via the mountain route.
