Manufacturers want the SIM card killed
To replace the old SIM card in telephones, manufacturers and operators have relied on eSIM for several years. This chip is not removable or housed in a drawer, as we have seen since the mobile phone has existed, but directly integrated into the components of the smartphone.
This solution offers some practical advantages to users, who can change line or plan more quickly, without waiting for their new operator to send them a new SIM card by post, but also some disadvantages when it comes time to migrate to their new line. an old smartphone to a new model.
We also learned, not long ago, that Google was going to solve this annoying problem by integrating a tool into Android to facilitate the transfer of eSIMs between different Android smartphones.
However, the eSIM could quickly give way to a new technology, the iSIM. Despite a very similar name for us French speakers, these two cards are very different from each other.
iSIM saves space, and money, for every smartphone produced
The iSIM is not an additional card integrated by default into the device, this time it is integrated into the mobile processor. This allows manufacturers to save a little space in the body of each smartphone, but also a little money on manufacturing costs.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen2 processor, which equips most premium smartphones released in recent weeks, is the first chip to adopt iSIM, but manufacturers are not forced to use it. In fact, we do not yet know which model allows you to replace your traditional SIM with an iSIM, since no brand has communicated on the subject.
Good news, however, mobile operators will not have to update their infrastructure to adopt iSIM. The switch can be made in a more or less transparent way for the user, in any case if the latter wishes to adopt this chip in the coming years.
