After the EU decision – cricket flour: is it healthy?

Most didn’t even know that crickets can be made into flour, but now, after the European Union’s decision in mid-January, the news is going viral. The new law came into effect on January 26th. With this, the EU wants to find alternative and sustainable sources for proteins.

First the yellow larvae, then the locusts, and now the crickets. Rich in protein and nutrients, insects account for less than 1% of the global agricultural carbon footprint. But it should be remembered at this point: Here a living being is processed into powder. Something that has been part of the repertoire of grocery stores in the Far East for decades. Why? It is a 100% natural product with a high protein content, approximately three times that of meat. Compared to other animal protein sources, cricket meal contains an important amount of dietary fiber and, more importantly, it is particularly rich of calcium, iron and vitamin B12 – ideal bases for biscuits and crackers. In addition to all this, it promotes bone growth and prevents iron deficiency and megaloblastic anemia (impaired formation of red blood cells). Risk of allergy But: as “Corriere.it” reports, consumers in many European countries, including Italy, continue to distrust them new foods. Especially since they also harbor allergy risks: the consumption of these flours can cause such reactions, especially in people whose organism is sensitive to shellfish, dust, mites and molluscs.
