After the fire – new container school in full operation

The students of the HAK 1 are back from vacation – and after the school fire in the replacement quarters.

We were afraid that we would be taught from home again or that we would be split up between other schools. That’s why we’re very happy that we can be here in the containers,” says 15-year-old Angelina. She goes to the 2bk of the Handeksakademie 2 in the city of Salzburg. After the fire, the future was uncertain Ten weeks ago – i.e. shortly after the start of the holidays – scarfing work went wrong and set the school on fire. The extinguishing work kept countless firefighters in suspense until the early hours of the morning. After that, the uncertainty was great: can the school be saved or have flames and extinguishing water destroyed too much? “It quickly became clear that we could keep the building. Nevertheless, it will take at least 1.5 years to refurbish the school,” says Wolfgang Gleissner, Managing Director of Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft. While some were still thinking about the refurbishment, others were already planning the accommodation of the students after the holidays. The solution: A container village on the school grounds. “It was a turbulent holiday with many meetings. But now I’m very happy that all 19 classes have found space in the containers,” says Director Thomas Heidinger happily. And Education Minister Daniela Gutschi is also more than satisfied: “Everything really worked without complaint. We still have to adjust a few small things, but we are very happy that everyone is in their classes,” she says.
