after the requisition of their accommodation, students not yet sure of their fate

Little by little, students are leaving their accommodation without really knowing if they will return at the start of the school year in September. In mid-April, the flurry of moves began for those whose university accommodation was requisitioned to accommodate security personnel, public officials and volunteers mobilized during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will last until the end of June, with the arrival of the first occupants expected around July 20.

The Ile-de-France housing stock of university and school centers (Crous) has 22,000 places, 30% of which are unoccupied in the summer, the interministerial delegation to the Olympic and Paralympic Games had made the bet, in spring 2023, that the operation would be painless: only twelve residences out of one hundred and fifty were selected, for a total of 3,200 housing units.

At the end of August 2023, however, the Paris administrative court suspended in summary proceedings the decision of the Crous to limit occupancy leases for student accommodation to June 30. But the Council of State, on December 29, 2023, validated the requisitions, recalling the establishment of “various aid to offset the consequences of a change of accommodation” : compensation of 100 euros and two free places to attend Olympic events.

Less than a hundred days before the Olympics, time is running out and the director of the Crous de Paris, Thierry Bégué, is scrutinizing in real time the slightest free space in his park which could be offered as a rehousing solution to one of the 660 students who are there. expressed the wish. In total, in the three academies of Paris, Versailles and Créteil, more than 1,400 have requested a new room for the summer period, most of them in order to do an internship or work to pay for their studies.

” Common sense “

“We had 150 accommodations available as of April 11 and we were able to carry out 82 rehousings by providing students with boxes, logistical assistance for the move as well as several trucks to transport their belongings to the thirty host residences », he relates. Sixteen students organized themselves to move into their new rooms, bringing the number of vacated accommodations to 98.

This provision falls under the ” common sense “according to the Minister of Higher Education. “It will make it possible to meet the needs of those who will come to work: police officers, firefighters, caregivers”, declared Sylvie Retailleau before the senators on April 9. A few months earlier, her sports colleague, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, had caused an outcry by talking about students “proud to leave their homes”.
