After the results of Parcoursup, the anxiety of the “empty nest” for parents

Pride and anguish are mixed in a thinly veiled way with the feeling of being abandoned. The Parcoursup whirlwind is not quite over, nor even the baccalaureate obtained, that the parents must begin to get used to: the child will potentially set sail to continue his higher education far from the family home. The subject arouses enough emotion for the call for testimonials launched on June 9 on the website of the World generates, in a few hours, dozens of messages from parents oscillating between apprehension, sadness and excitement. Mothers, in the vast majority, who seem to have been carrying student projects at arm’s length or almost for several years. And it’s not over since, with rare exceptions, the child leaves without worrying about logistics.

This is the specificity of this rite of passage: students who leave home shortly after obtaining their baccalaureate do so without assuming financial responsibility, or in a minimal way, which largely explains why they are a minority TO DO. As indicated by the social portrait of INSEE by 2020, 43% of 18-24 year olds have their own accommodation, with extremely diverse situations depending on the social status of young people, and only 17% live there exclusively and finance it themselves.

So here are the families again, often stunned by Parcoursup, launched in a race to financial arrangements, in search of housing, sucked in by a host of practical details. Especially since the destination is not always well decided. As a result of Parcoursup’s late schedule, students submit wishes there which can in the best case result in training proposals everywhere in France from June, or in an endless wait, sometimes until September.

But Théophane chose to take the tangent. Pierre Chuchkoff, the father, accuses the blow.
