After The Sun Brothers, 4 martial arts series to watch on Netflix

As in The Sun Brothers with Michelle Yeoh, these TV series also available on Netflix are filled with martial arts, in the fantasy or thriller genres.

Since January 4, 2024, Michelle Yeoh is the heroine of a new Netflix series filled with martial arts, drama and humor: The Sun Brothers. Given its high ranking in the Top 10, it seems to capture a large share of subscribers.

After the eight episodes of this season 1, it is possible to switch on American Born Chinese, another series worn by this always masterful Oscar-winning actress, on Disney+. But if you want to stay in the Netflix catalog, the four series in this guide also focus on martial arts, in the genre of fantasy, thriller or family drama.

Alchemy of Souls

Little publicized, the Korean series Alchemy of Souls yet tends to be unanimous. It is halfway between the fantasy genre and the historical genre. A curse forbids Jang Uk, son of a noble family, from learning to master martial arts. But he meets Mu Deok, a blind woman whose body is actually possessed by a powerful witch, a “Naksu”, who is also a wanted assassin. They both make a deal.

In Alchemy of Souls, there is magic, martial arts, impeccable special effects, lots of gags, and a love story in the straight line of Korean series (k-drama style). All over the course of 30 episodes of more than an hour each: you have plenty to do.

Cobra Kai

The film Karate Kid is cult. Here is the sequel, in the form of a TV series, taking place 34 years after the events of the feature film. William Zabka (Daniel LaRusso) and Ralph Macchio (Johnny Lawrence) reprise their roles.

Johnny has just lost his job and decides to reopen the dojo. His rivalry with Daniel is rekindled, but the latter now has a family. Cobra Kaiwhich has won wide support from the public and critics, is in its fifth season, and the series will be entitled to a real end with a sixth season expected for 2025.

Blue Eye Samurai

It was a nice late 2023 animated surprise on Netflix. We are transported to Japan in 1633 — an era known as the “Edo period”. Japan, at that time, closed the borders to block access to foreigners. Mizu, for her part, is mixed race, with blue eyes. To save her skin, she must hide her eyes with glasses, as well as hide her gender by pretending to be a man. But Mizu is also a samurai on a quest for revenge. This quest leads her to a number of encounters.

Blue Eye Samurai was almost unanimously praised for its graphic style and its extremely mature story (it’s an anime best reserved for adults), with a story that delves deeper into Japanese culture during the samurai era. Just as the political status of women is intelligently addressed — Mizu meets Akemi, a forced bride princess. On the animation side, we owe this work to the French studio Blue Spirit: with Arcana produced by Fortiche, French animation studios are definitely full of talent.

Wu Assassins

A chef turns out to be the latest born in an ancient line of assassins. He is therefore a Wu Assassin, but in spite of himself. After encountering a mystical force, he has no choice but to accept his powers as a fighter… but also to face supernatural warriors. Wu Assassins takes place between martial arts and fantasy universe over the course of 10 action-packed episodes.
